Bed Wetting in Hampshire
Counselling, CBT and EMDR for Bed Wetting in Fareham
Help with bedwetting
Bedwetting is common in children and usually not linked to a serious medical condition. For children under the age of 5, it’s often considered normal, and doctors typically advise a “wait and see” approach, as most children outgrow it by the age of five. However, if a child is over six and still wetting the bed, treatment may be necessary, depending on the child’s, parents’, and doctor’s views.
Before treatment, a doctor will check for underlying medical or emotional causes. If no medical issue is found, behavioural strategies, medications, or, in rare cases, surgery, can help. Non-medical treatments, such as behavioural modifications, are often effective. Success requires commitment and motivation from both the child and parents.
Counselling, CBT and Hypnotherapy for Bed Wetting
How can I stop my child from wetting the bed?
1. Establish a Consistent Bedtime Routine. Ensure your child goes to bed at the same time each night and follows a calming pre-sleep routine to reduce anxiety and stress, which can sometimes contribute to bedwetting.
2. Limit Fluid Intake Before Bed. Reduce your child's intake of fluids in the evening, particularly caffeine or sugary drinks, which can increase urine production. Encourage them to drink more during the day.
3. Encourage Regular Bathroom Use. Make sure your child uses the bathroom right before bed, even if they don’t feel the urge to go. This helps reduce the risk of accidents during the night.
4. Use Bedwetting Alarms. Bedwetting alarms are effective tools that alert your child when they begin to wet the bed. Studies show that they can be successful in up to 80% of cases.
5. Consider Hypnotherapy. Hypnotherapy can be highly effective for children who experience anxiety or subconscious issues contributing to bedwetting. A trained hypnotherapist can help your child retrain their mind to stay dry at night and manage any stress that may be causing the problem.
6. Seek Counselling for Emotional Issues. If emotional stress, such as school-related anxiety or family changes, may be contributing to your child’s bedwetting, counselling can help address these psychological factors. A counsellor can work with your child to resolve any emotional triggers that might be affecting their sleep patterns.
7. Use Positive Reinforcement. Encourage and reward your child for dry nights with positive reinforcement. Avoid punishment, as this can lead to feelings of shame and worsen the issue.
8. Monitor and Address Sleep Patterns. Ensure your child is getting enough sleep and isn’t overtired, as deep sleep can sometimes make it harder for them to wake up when their bladder is full.
9. Consult your GP. If the bedwetting persists beyond the age of 7 or if there are other signs of health issues, consult with a doctor to rule out medical conditions such as urinary tract infections (UTIs) or bladder dysfunction.

Bedwetting, or nocturnal enuresis, is a common issue, affecting around 15-20% of children over the age of five. While it can be distressing for both children and parents, there are effective therapies available. The most successful treatments often combine behavioural techniques, such as bedwetting alarms, with professional support like counselling and hypnotherapy. Counselling helps address any emotional or psychological factors that may contribute to the condition, while hypnotherapy has been shown to be highly effective in retraining the subconscious mind and reducing anxiety around sleep.
