Finding Help and Healing After Bereavement in Fareham, Hampshire

Death and loss are an inevitable part of life, however, when we experience bereavement, in the form of the loss of someone close to us, we can become overwhelmed with grief, experiencing shock, numbness, sadness, and often anger. These are all normal responses of the grieving process. However, if left unprocessed, such losses can leave us with emotional scars and long-term difficulties.

If you have experienced the death of someone who was very important to you, you may find it difficult to adjust to the massive changes that will be happening in your life right now. Grief can turn your world upside down, changing your beliefs, your personality, and even your sense of reality.

Bereavement is the time we spend adjusting to loss. There is no right or wrong way to feel during the bereavement period – everyone must learn to cope in their own way, and grieve in their own time.

You don’t know who is important to you until you actually lose them.

The effects of bereavement can be profound and long-lasting, and can vary greatly from one person to another. Some common effects of bereavement include:

  1. Emotional responses: People who are grieving may feel a wide range of emotions, including sadness, anger, guilt, and fear. They may also experience feelings of isolation and loneliness.

  2. Physical responses: Grief can take a physical toll on the body. People who are grieving may experience changes in appetite, difficulty sleeping, and fatigue. They may also be more susceptible to illness.

  3. Cognitive responses: Grief can affect a person's ability to think and concentrate. They may have difficulty making decisions or solving problems.

  4. Behavioural responses: People who are grieving may exhibit changes in their behaviour, such as withdrawing from social activities or engaging in risky behaviour.

It is important to remember that everyone grieves differently, and there is no "right" way to grieve. It is normal to experience a wide range of emotions and to need time to adjust to the loss. Seeking support from friends, family, or a mental health professional can be helpful in coping with the effects of bereavement.

Healing from Bereavement: How to Move Forward after a Loss

“Jo’s support and counselling has been just what I needed at a time when I wasn’t sure what the answers were. I am really grateful for everything Jo has done and taught me."

— Maria (Portsmouth)

Usually, the first response to the loss of someone is shock and disbelief, as we find it difficult to accept the reality of the loss. This is then usually followed by denial. For example, you might try and convince yourself that life is just the same as it was before, and you may even re-enact day to day activities such as making a cup of tea for your partner; this is quite normal and understandable. These feelings of denial may then give way to feelings of anger and even guilt. These emotions can manifest themselves in a variety of different ways and can include becoming easily agitated and having emotional outbursts. Often a period of depression may follow, as can bouts of irritability, changes in appetite, lack of motivation, social withdrawal and sometimes even physical pains. You may feel that your life simply does not have a purpose anymore, and that it has lost its meaning. Finally, you start to enter a time of acceptance for your loss; during this stage your thoughts of loss may become less intense and less frequent, allowing you to regain your motivation and energy. Reaching this final stage can, however, take considerable time, and is a process that cannot be hurried. That is one of the many ways Bereavement Counselling at the Fareham Counselling Centre can help you.
