Counselling for Eating Disorders in: How We Can Help You?…

Having an eating disorder can make you feel lost and alone. Often you may not know where to turn for help.

Are you hiding an eating disorder because you feel ashamed or too embarrassed to talk about it?  You are not alone and there is help for you.  If you can be brave and pick up the phone and call us it will be the best phone call you’ve made in a long time!

There are many different eating disorders that you may be suffering from. Counselling can help you with them all, including

·      Bulimia

·      Anorexia

·      BDD (Body Dysmorphic Disorder)

·      Binge Eating Disorder

·      Restricting

Eating disorders are viewed as mental and physical illnesses categorised by unhealthy relationships with food and serious disturbances in eating behaviour. It’s common for people with an eating disorder to have one or more co-occurring conditions. One study found that 71% of people with an eating disorder were also diagnosed with an anxiety or mood disorder. A staggering 1.25 million people in the UK suffer from an eating disorder. In the US, an estimated 30 million people in the US struggle with an eating disorder (approximately 20 million women and 10 million men).

In a study of young adults, dieting was the most important predictor of developing an eating disorder. Those who dieted moderately were found to be five times more likely to develop an eating disorder, and those who practised extreme restriction were eighteen times more likely to develop an eating disorder than those who did not diet.

Although eating disorders can be successfully treated, only 1 in 10 people with an eating disorder ever receive treatment. Sadly, eating disorders have the highest mortality rate of any mental illness. Every hour, at least one person dies in the US as a direct result of an eating disorder.

How can counselling help me overcome my eating disorder?

Counselling with one of our team of eating disorder therapists here in Fareham or online is a very effective therapy that will help you in many ways.

Firstly, your counsellor will help you to come to terms with your eating disorder in a safe, non-judgmental environment.

They will work with you to identify and overcome any underlying emotional issues that are contributing to your having an eating disorder. Everything you discuss in your counselling sessions will be completely confidential.

As you progress through your counselling sessions you will be supported to make positive changes to your relationship with food. You will receive help and support to reduce the emotional thoughts and feelings you have. As a result, you will find that the number of occasions that binge, restrict or purge will gradually reduce.

On your journey to recovering from your eating disorder, your counsellor will help you to develop skills and positive strategies to deal with any feelings of low self-esteem or negative thoughts and feelings you have about yourself.

Your counsellor will encourage and support you at every step of your recovery from your eating disorder. They will help you to set small, achievable goals at each session. As you progress through therapy, the achievement of these goals will allow you to build a positive self-image and improve your self-confidence.

“Thank you so much for your help and particularly to Ant who’s help has been fantastic across the 7 sessions I’ve had with him. To be able to feel comfortable to talk openly and honestly without any fear of feeling judged is a massive help and has had a huge impact on how I feel about myself and the areas of my life that were making me feel very anxious. I’ve learned a number of new techniques and ideas of how I can manage my thoughts that I feel confident about using going forward. Ant is a great listener and has provided such positive advice and I’m truly grateful for this. The environment where the sessions were held was very nice as well. I’d highly recommend you to anyone as it’s so important to talk”
