WHAT IS EMDR THERAPY?

EMDR Therapy (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) is an extremely effective treatment that is recommended to help with trauma-related issues - PTSD, anxiety, panic attacks, and depression. EMDR addresses trauma-based memories and experiences that haven’t been completely processed by the brain. EMDR helps to fully process and resolve these memories and issues. The client is then able to move on from the trauma, and the distressing symptoms associated with it.

This therapy engages the brain in a neutral movement, either tapping or following a hand movement, during which time the trauma-induced event is remembered by the client. This helps the client’s brain to re-connect with their body and as a result, trauma is resolved.

Your therapist will work with you to:

  • Process and relieve your traumatic memories

  • Be able to recall the event without triggering your anxiety or other distressing symptoms.

EMDR is used to support recovery from trauma without needing detailed discussion of distressing events. Instead, it focuses on shifting emotions, thoughts, and behaviours linked to these experiences, allowing the brain’s natural healing process to resume. While the brain is a physical organ, the mind encompasses thoughts, memories, and experiences that define us. EMDR taps into the brain’s structure, where memories and sensory cues are interconnected, which is why sensory experiences can trigger vivid memories. This method offers relief and helps reframe traumatic memories.

WHAT IS EMDR USED FOR?

EMDR uses the Adaptive Information Processing (AIP) model, developed by Dr. Francine Shapiro, to address how trauma memories are stored differently in the brain. While ordinary experiences integrate smoothly, traumatic memories often remain disconnected, creating an "open wound" that the brain hasn’t healed. This disconnect can make the mind more sensitive to sensory triggers tied to trauma, reinforcing negative feelings.

Suppressed memories may still cause symptoms, as the mind avoids painful experiences but can't fully "heal" without addressing them. EMDR helps reconnect and process these memories for recovery.

What does EMDR therapy involve?

EMDR therapy includes eight phases spread across multiple sessions, often combining phases within one session. Phases 1 and 2 typically occur early on, while phases 3 through 8 span multiple later sessions. Addressing a single disturbing memory usually requires 3–6 sessions, while complex traumas may need 8–12 sessions or more. Each session lasts about 50 to 90 minutes. The eight phases of EMDR are:

  • History and Information Gathering: Your therapist learns about your background, past events, and therapy goals to assess suitability for EMDR.

  • Preparation and Education: They outline what to expect and provide tools for emotional stability.

  • Assessment: Identifies traumatic memories and beliefs for reprocessing.

  • Desensitisation and Reprocessing: Focuses on processing negative memories.

  • Installation: Reinforces positive beliefs.

  • Body Scan: Assesses physical responses to memories.

  • Closure and Stabilisation: Provides support between sessions.

  • Reevaluation: Reviews progress and adjusts goals.
